CSDy Graduate Program Handbook
CSDy Computing Guide
This guide is intended to serve as a practical introduction to computing in the CSDy department. It is divided into two parts. The first part is intended for people who have never used the UNIX operating system before. There are many books devoted to UNIX and how to take advantage of all its features, but here the emphasis is on a small set of basic commands that are critical for getting started. Besides the commands there are descriptions of basic concepts, including flags, wildcards, and directories, and some information on printing and editors. The second section briefly details the workstation environment and its role as a small part of a larger world, the internet. You have several accounts at the University of Minnesota, which are listed and described. This section should be useful to both new and experienced users; it contains some information specific to the computing in the CSDy department and the University of Minnesota.
